So the premise is simple, and totally appealing to the vain and narcissistic among us. You let a primitive software application pit your friends head to head against one another, deciding which is the _____-er of the two, on a wide range of topics: smarter, more generous, hotter, would rather have dinner with, etc. The ‘innocent and unassuming’ software then stores and compiles your data to present to all and sundry, letting the universe know who really sits atop the pecking order.
Well once curiosity had finished her dirty work with the cat, she came over and got the best of me, and before I knew it I was having a long gander at my cumulative ‘Compare your Friends’ results. All in all, I have to say I was pretty happy with most of it–otherwise I probably wouldn’t have shared the results here; still working on getting over that shallow and attention-starved thingy I got goin’ on:-). In fact, it was pretty interesting to see how closely the results seemed to reflect the traits that I work to maximize.
HOWEVER, there was one category that just left me feeling gross inside. Chew on this for a minute: I have lost every time I have been up for consideration of who is braver! I mean, I’m not here to plead my case that I’m truly a courageous individual, but goodness me 0 for 3!?! I have no trouble swallowing the 0 for 3 in the more fashionable category–I’m a teacher, and I just don’t care much– but bravery! Holy crap, I twice stormed to the center of blazing infernos and on several occasions raced into deadly ocean conditions to protect innocent lives. not to mention that I drive an hour out of my way every week to train with the toughest MMA fighters around. (OK, now I am pleading my case, and really just sound defensive and pathetic.) In any case, boys and girls, I recognize fully that I have plenty of faults, and that I’m lacking in many areas, but I’m sorry bravery just ain’t one of ‘em.
Is it just that I’m being compared to base jumpers and astronauts? or perhaps–heaven forbid!–I am/appear to be getting soft in my old age? I guess it’s time to seriously consider taking up sky-diving or snake-wrangling or something.
You people are so doggone demanding. Sheesh!
(Have a look for yourself.)
