Recently, during a disagreement, my Bolivian-Japanese friend got straight-up mad at me for addressing him with this word a few times in a row. He spent several years in the barrios of East LA and insists that latinos don’t ever call each other “Dude.” That may have been true in the ’80s (Think ‘Blood in Blood out‘ era), but “Dude?!” has infiltrated even the vatos locos scene these days. I tried to explain to him that he shouldn’t take offense. Saying “Dude?!” is just ingrained in my SoCal roots. Maybe this vid would help him understand:
