LinkedIn and Facebook: Your 2 Profiles of the Future.

So, the MySpace experience is really starting to lose its luster for me. Way too much spam, lots of mindless, obnoxious commentary (well, not on my page, but it’s a rampant issue throughout the network).

Since early in the year, I have been on the lookout for something a bit more slick and professional looking–something that wouldn’t become dirty laundry to hide from a future employer or admissions office. Then a buddy introduced me to LinkedIn. I am still feeling my way around, but I was immediately conscious of how much intrinsic value LinkedIn offers its members in terms of attractive, useful, quantifiable self-PR. Fraternities and secret societies included, this has got to be the most widely accessible professional networking forum in history and there are no signs that it will lose market share anytime soon.

And for those who have no need for formal professional networks, or if you just want to keep you professional and private lives separate, Facebook has clearly outflanked the mighty MySpace as it establishes a new era of dominance.

So, it appears that the two ‘must join’ communities for the current era have been conveniently decided for us. Let’s face it, cool factor and familiarity are not the only deciding issues. These networks are social by definition, so the masses will tend to follow the herd, and you’re going to have to follow right along yourself, or be out of the loop.

Facebook is signing new members at a rate of roughly 200,000 per day, and they’ve opened their platform to 3rd party content and application developers. <–lots of interesting and relevant links at the end of Marc’s article, and here .

  1. “Game over?” Damn, I hadn’t even put my 100 yen in the slot yet. Same old story.

I keep getting facebook emails and following links, adding the people to my friends list, but not really seeing the point. It will just be another blog registration that will take up some cyber space and never be used.

I get enough stick from the missus for the time I spend on the computer to write these spartan comments, send a couple of emails, or play a few games of chess.

And the thing is, she’s got a point.

I enjoy reading your blog though, Steve. I just don’t want to spend more time staring at a monitor.

  2. I have been on linked in for a while, and actually canceled my MySpace account because I did not see to much use for it… Maybe I am missing something, but I am not sure I understand how to get my blog, LinkedIn, and MySpace/facebook all working together. Are there really a lot of professionals out there surfing MySpace looking for business contacts?

LinkedIn on the other hand is invaluable! I’d love to see a little conversation on this topic.

    Thanks for the great post.

  3. I never realised Linkedin supported “fraternities and secret societies”. I should leave before all the spankings and other homoerotic activities start.

  4. Tony: Yes, I definitely hear you about spending too much time in front of the monitor. These days, I try to leave my laptop at work at least a couple times a week to make sure I sleep enough!
I never could get into the online chess thing, though I’d like to give it another chance. Poker for play money outlives its entertainment value once you have 5 or 6 million bucks in your play money account!

Brad: Take a look at what folks have to say about the potential to integrate LinkedIn as a build on application for the Facebook platform. That would be Facebook’s best move as I see it. Why wait for Facebook, or another 3rd party vendor to replicate the LinkedIn functionality in a more portable product? Anyway, I’m sure the good folks a LinkedIn are way ahead of us on this one…

Rob: For the record, my father was the last person I let spank me, back when I was about 6 years old… thank goodness that’s over.

  5. I think I really need to look into what FaceBook has to offer now. Membership seems to be growing like crazy. Can I reproduce my feed there via RSS? I really dont want to start a second blog.
