What the World Eats

Hungy Planet #10

Here’s an excellent Time photoessay I found over at Boing Boing, which depicts images of the conspumption habits of the haves, the have-nots, and all of those in between.

For most of us, drawing comparisons on a global scale can be an exercise in frustration, but how about on a family scale? Family is a concept we can all get our heads around.

Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about how much food and money I waste on a weekly basis (including all the unnecessary items I consume). This photoessay really put things in perspective for me.

  1. Great photo essays and very timely for me as it happens. I have a child with what I will call ‘behavioural’ issues. I have long since wondered about the affect of foods on his system, not just the obvious like MSG , sulphates, nitrates etc, but even free range eggs etc. I have always thought I gave my kids good food, then I decided 2 and a half weeks ago to ‘go macro- biotic’. I seemed to me the only way to really determine if foods were affecting him. I got the whole family on board and said , lets try a month of no meat, no fish, no eggs, no dairy. They all agreed.
What I was not prepared for, was how DAMN good the food tastes. We are on brown rice and veg. As organic as possible.
What I have noticed, is despite the high cost of organic genmai, the money I am spending on food is minimal. On Tuesday’s I always take all my white trays and gyunyu paks to the supermarket near work. I realised today, I had two paks and NO trays, my footprint on this world had shrunk. The macro way demands we chew our food well, at first I felt like, ‘hurry up already’ I was always in such a rush to ‘get through’ a meal, never taking a moment to taste it, to contemplate it. taking this time out to chew,
our family time has increased as we sit, and chat and discuss things, enjoying a meal as something to be savoured, to be grateful for, not something to be endured a few times day.
Would I LOVE a slice of pizza? YES, Could I suck back a glass of wine right now? YES. can I rule out the possibilty of ever experiencing the joy of yakiniku again? NO. But for right now, I feel we have achieved a simplicity, that I have craved. When I close my eyes to sleep, I know that I have put into my kids bodies the best possible foods I can find right here and right now.

  2. Hi there Miss Behaving! Thanks so much for the excellent post.
My only introduction to macrobiotics has been through Cyndy Violette, who is one of the top Poker players in the world. Through her success, she’s converted quite a few professional players.
In any case, it’s so cool that you’ve got the whole family on board. I look forward to hearing all about it next time we chat. I think it’s really important to reset your routines and put your vices in perspective every once in a while. Unfortunately, for me the ‘while’ between ‘onces’ seems to get longer every year. Thanks for the reminder!
