BitTorrent ’sells out.’ Good for them.

All too often, developers of innovative software must decide whether to hold on to their purist roots or face the risk of being labeled ’sell outs.

This SciAm article gives the lowdown on the decision to distribute paid content through BitTorrent, the–until now–always free, open source brainchild of coding genius Bram Cohen. BitTorrent’s latest move is sure to see mixed reactions as fans of the Peer-to-Peer legend try to work out whether the move marks a major victory, a major defeat, or simply an inevitable consequence of financial opportunity. I’m thinking it’s the last choice….and you know what: I’m also thinking, ‘Way to go Bram!’

See Wired magazine’s 2004 article for a detailed history of BitTorrent and its creator Bram Cohen.

The SciAm article gives equal treatment to JOOST (formerly known as The Venice Project), but that project’s commercial aims appear to have been clear from the beginning, so their story is a bit of a yawner.

The BitTorrent news is sure to sting a few more folks.
